Fostering the sport of wrestling in the New York Metropolitan Area

In Manhattan, there are 71 public high schools.  Only 1, Stuyvesant, offers wrestling as a sport to its students, despite the fact that wrestling is a "top 10" sport in participation nation wide.  There are a large number of private and Catholic schools in the city that also do not offer wrestling.

With those facts in mind, combined with the amazing response to the MWA's Beat the Streets Middle School program, there will simply be no outlets for young athletes who want to compete at the high school level, but can not do so because their school simply does not offer the sport to its students.

We believe that we have a duty to do something about that paradigm.

Students at high schools throughout New York City may participate as part of the "Manhattan United Wrestling Team."

The team will train just like any other high school team and its members will be expected to make the same commitment to excellence as if the team was representing only one school.

Our plan is to have a single practice site and group of coaches, but to enter a "tournament only" schedule during the season.  By doing this, each athlete will represent his own school and thus maintain his eligibility for post season competition without jeopardizing the eligibility of athletes from competing schools.
