USAW Bronze Level Certification Program. Beat The Streets UPDATE

date: 2005-11-29
by: Al Bevilacqua

Bill Crum and myself hosted a USAW Bronze Level Certification Program yesterday at Hunter College and it went very well. We sincerely thank Ms. Terry Wansert, AD at Hunter College for her continued support of the MWA Beat the Streets Program. The facilities at Hunter are terrific and the cordial relationship is welcomed to our efforts of developing wrestling in the Middle Schools of New York City..

Hunter College will also be hosting the Mayor's Cup and we look forward to hosting a great event at Hunter for the 28 High School Programs that are invited to participate. The MWA and the MWA BTS will be the Sponsor and we will provide a first class event as we have done since 1985.

We have certified 12 Middle School Coaches as we have 3 others coaches who are already Bronze Certified. We have a great group of people and they know it is there effort with the kids that will make the program a success. All of our coaches are certified teachers with a wrestling background.

We can not help them once the whistle blows to start a practice. We have given them the tools to make it happen as they have resource materials provided by USAW with books, DVD, Video Tapes and copies of my original videos that were used by the USWF in the 1970's and 1980's. The first ever Coaches Certification Program I hosted at Hofstra University in 1975 thirty years almost to the day. Time flies! I believe strongly in the program and it led to the success SAW had in the 1990's winning two world team championships with many World and Olympic Champions, many of whom were taught the 7 Basic Skills by certified instructors during their developmental years.

They know the deal, we are working with young people who do not know a "switch" from a "sweatshirt". Slow and easy and most importantly, have fun!. They have posters, magazines and marketing materials plus we delivered 7 brand new mats with 3 more on their way. We will provide the kids with wrestling shoes, head guards, t-shirts, shorts, USAW Event Card to provide liability, secondary medical insurance to all participants and coaches. We expect over 400-500 kids to sign-up and we have begun reaching out to the suppliers of wrestling equipment to help the way Resilite and Dollamur have helped with the mats. We need Proud Sponsors of the Beat the Streets Program to help us get the job done.

As Board Members, you can help as well, by sponsoring a Kid or a team's equipment needs. Each wrestler needs $100 worth of equipment including a USAW Event Card. Give whatever you can afford, buy a kid a pair of wrestling shoes, a head guard etc. I can not do it all be myself.
