Monsignor Farrell HS (CHSAA) Defends its Team Title Winning the Annual Mayors\‘ Cup Wrestling Championships at the beautiful Harlem Armory in Manhattan on Superbowl Sunday!

This years version of the Mayors Cup was expanded to allow every wrestling program in all 5 Boroughs to participate in the prestigious event. The competition organizers , Metropolitan Wrestling Association (MWA), no strangers to handling huge events, was the Competition Managers for the 2003 World Championships held in Madison Square Garden. They added separate division for Girls Wrestling, 20 Developmental teams created the past 2 years and another Novice Division for Junior Varsity wrestlers.

In a separate area of the facility the Beat the Streets Wrestling Middle Schools held its annual Wrestling Day with a clinic, skills and drills and a light scrimmage for all 200 hundred kids from the 10 Winter Programs.

The clinic had a very special guest, Mike Novogratz, Chairman of Beat the Streets Wrestling Inc. Mike was a former Captain, NCAA Qualifier and an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) runner-up while wrestling all 4 years at Princeton University. He provided a 90 minute session reviewing the basic skills and position drills for the wrestlers. He broke the wrestlers into smaller groups and conducted some live scrimmaging. All of the kids and their parents had a great time. After the clinic was completed they observed their future high school teams wrestling in the Cup.

The event required two days of competition and under consideration is options for next year as the event has grown so big it may require Madison Square Garden to house the potential huge event.

Next year the BTS/PSAL will be expanding with 15 new high school teams being added. The schools selected will be announced in the Spring by the PSAL Office.

Mayor's Cup Wrestling Tournament 2008

date: 2008-01-08 15:05:50
by: John Welch

Plan on the dates Friday February 1 – Sunday February 3, 2008. The Metropolitan Wrestling Association is back with its 5th Mayor’s Cup 2008. It is still not as big as the world championships, but still it is catching up. This year, due to the growth of wrestling, mostly thanks to the efforts of Beat the Streets, Inc. there will be up to 15 more teams entered in either the varsity or novice division. This year the novice division will be divided into 9th and 10th graders and 11th and 12th graders. Again this event is an NYC HAPPENING, a symbol of growth for wrestling, an annual event in which to gather wrestling friends, and a tie to the Mayor of the greatest city in the world. That says something.

The MWA in conjunction with the Mayor’s Office, The NYC Sports Commission, Beat the Streets, Inc, Martin Luther High School, the Harlem Armory and the three groups that coordinate high school wrestling in the city (the PSAL; the CHSAA; the NYSAISAA) will host at the Harlem Armory the 5th year of the Mayor’s Cup of wrestling. All the high school wrestlers from each group are invited to compete for team and individual weight class honors and to be the best wrestler in the city.

The MWA is seeking friends of wrestling to assist with running the event. We need floor monitors, timekeepers; scorers; sales; hospitality, etc throughout the day. If you are available that Friday evening February 1st for set-up; Saturday February 2nd and/or Saturday February 3rd and want to be involved in a great city event, please email me at address below or call 732-822-7595... read more..

by: Venetsian

Coaches Tim Flynn, Andy Seras and Carl Fronhofer will headline the Clinic Staff October 20th at Farrell HS.

Beat the Streets Coaches College has moved its venue for the Coaches College Clinic originally scheduled for Grand Street Campus HS to help co-sponsor the Pinning Down Autism program. The Coaches and Clinic Benefit will help advanced the mission and provide New York City wrestlers and coaches a unique opportunity to learn from some of the top wrestling coaches in the country.

During the summer Beat the Streets Wrestling Inc. helped inaugurate the Pinning Down Autism successful Benefit Tournament at Petrides HS in Staten Island. Meet Director Jason Bross, the father of an autistic child, reached out to the wrestling community asking for support at the inaugural Benefit Tournament. Through his efforts, the wrestling community responded by initiating Benefit Events throughout the Northeast to help raise awareness of the disease that afflicts far too many children. It is known as a \"silent\" disease and efforts are being made to make awareness of the disease by speaking for the afflicted children... read more..

by: Al Bevilacqua

Paul Kieblicsz, NYAC and Manager of the USA Wrestling World Team preparing NYAC wrestler Lindsay Durlacher, for his fifth Place match. Lindsay, a Bronze Medalist in 2006, lost to the eventual World Champion Hamid Sourian of Iran in the third round. He had to battle back with 3 more matches in a span of 45 minutes to qualify for the Bronze Medal match. He lost to Serbia’s Kristijan Fris and finished 4th. The good news is that he qualified the weight class for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Harry Lester lost to the 2004 Olympic Champion Mansurov and eventual World Champion in a semi-final bout. The hometown favorite was the beneficiary of some "tight" calls in the semi-finals as witnessed by this reporter live on WCSN

Veterans of International wrestling have seen hometown favorites get a "slight edge" in every World level competition except when they are in the United States as witnessed by 12,500 fans at the 2003 World Championships held in Madison Square Garden.... read more..
