But first up for the U.S. Olympic women's freestyle wrestling team: A visit to Staten Island.
The team members - Sara McMann, Toccara Montgomery, Tela O'Donnel, Patricia Miranda and head coach Terry Steiner - arrived on the Island yesterday to prepare for the Athens Olympic Games.
Before beginning training at the D'Silvestri Wrestling room at Monsignor Farrell High School, the Olympians were luxury-box guests of Molinari Group LLC at the Staten Island Yankees' home opener last night.
Steiner said the women are confident after doing well against powerhouse Japan at the recent World Cup Champions in Tokyo.
"We expect to go in and win four medals," Steiner said of the Olympics. "We definately have big expectations."
"For all of us, I expect gold," said Ms.McMann, 23 of Takoma Park, MD. "All of us have beaten these opponents."
It is the first time that women's freestyle wrestling will be an Olympic Sport.
"I have a lot of momentum," said Ms. Montgomery, 21, who played multiple sports in high-school before excelling at wrestling. " I Feel really positive and upbeat."
Ms. O'Donnel, 21 who comes from Homer, Alaska, said she gravitated toward wrestling after first trying her hand at volleyball in high school.
"It teaches you lots of life lessons," she said of wrestling. "How to win and how to lose. It teaches you a work ethic, and self-confidence."
Ms. Montgomery, from Cleveland, said she believes the Olympics "is just going to be a mind-blowing experience for me."
While attending last night's game, Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented the team with a proclamation in honor of their stay here, which goes through next week.
"All of them really are champions, " Bloomberg said.
The Women will train at Farrell throughout the week. They are staying at the Staten Island Hotel in Graniteville while on the Island.
The Athens Games will be held Aug. 13-29 2004.
